Lander County School District is located in beautiful Battle Mountain
and Austin, Nevada, two small communities nestled between several
mountain ranges
in Northeastern Nevada. Our K-12 public school district has an
enrollment
of approximately 1,300 students and offers comprehensive curricular,
co-curricular,
and extra-curricular programs through two high schools. Our
district
is renowned for its hospitality and for producing outstanding academic
and
activity performance. Our District’s curriculum is aligned with
Nevada
State Standards. All teachers continue working on curriculum,
exhibiting
curriculum on the Internet for parents and others to review, and
planning
assessment, which will measure the success of these efforts.
Battle Mountain High School
has
an enrollment of 356 students in grades nine through twelve. An
Advanced
Placement English course at Battle Mountain High School has been
implemented,
as well as a career’s program that provides students and families’
opportunity
to explore the world of work through research and internships.
Over
fifty high school students participate in internship opportunities that
are
offered by businesses in our community. An additional computer
lab
was recently opened and was designed specifically for Internet use.
Battle Mountain Junior High School has an enrollment of 210 students and offers a comprehensive,
two-year
academic and activity program. Our Junior High School boasts
fifteen
certified and five classified employees. Our school has a
student/teacher
ratio of 18:1. The average class size is 21:1. It has
outstanding
programs for students of varying abilities; staff provides educational
programs
for the learning disabled as well as for accelerated learners.
The
elective offerings allow eighth grade students to enroll in classes
that
suit their interests and talents. Sixty percent of students at
our
Junior High School participate in at least one extracurricular activity
including
girl and boy’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, track, peer
mediators,
computer club, reader’s club, drill team, cheerleading, yearbook, and
tutoring.
The Battle Mountain
Elementary schools are made up of the Mary S. Black and the
Eliza
Pierce schools. The MSB houses grades two and three while the EP
houses grades Kindergarten and First. We have an early childhood
program for children with developmental delays ages three through six
and a mentally handicapped unit on campus. Within our
Kindergarten program, we are fortunate to have a Pre-Kindergarten
program for those students needing an extra year before they enter
school. We are a curriculum-based school focusing our attention
and efforts in getting
kids to master the basics of Reading, Writing, Math and Communication.
We use every tool at our
disposal
to make sure each and every child receives the education he or she
needs
on an individual basis. Currently we are implementing Saxon for
math,
McGraw Hill 2001 Reading and VoWac for Phonics. FOSS kits are
used
to teach a variety of science topics and we’ve implemented a Million
minutes
reading challenge to encourage students to read more at home. For
many
of our students, recesses are spent playing Math games in the library
for
student remediation and enrichment. We have two computers lab and
a
computer teacher insuring quality computer instruction is happening
Pre-Kg-3rd
grade. We host an annual Mom and Dad’s day and have
great
feedback and participation on those two days. We maintain a 95%
participation
rate at our Parent Teacher Conferences and 70% participation with our
yearly
Open House.
Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School contains
fourth grade, fifth grade, and sixth grade classes that serve Battle
Mountain and Northern Lander County. For the 2004/05 school year we
have 254 students. We had 96 % of our parents attend the first
parent-teacher conference and we have dedicated parent volunteers who
work in the classes. We have fourth grade music classes and fifth and
sixth grade instrumental band.
Eleanor Lemaire Elementary
Vision - All students can experience success when the students, staff,
and parents work together to generate a positive learning climate.
Lifelong learning skills are developed through a curriculum that
promotes respect, responsibility, and is governed by high expectations.
The principal, teachers, and
school board believe that:
1.
All students can learn
given enough practice at home and at school.
2.
Learning requires hard work
and practice.
3.
Learning is the most
important job that students have.
4.
Students will succeed with
the teachers, parents, and students working together.
Austin Schools, “Home of the Broncos,
Fillies and Colts” are located in southern Lander County on highway 305 North.
The doors of our school were opened in March of 1989; there are 6 classrooms,
1 computer lab, gymnasium, library, and wood/tech shop.
Our
school currently houses K-12th grades, with an enrollment of 60. Austin Schools have an extremely experienced and professional staff with an average of
20 yrs teaching experience. We currently have a 6:1 student to teacher
ratio.
Our mission statement states, “The
entire staff of Austin Schools will help students develop academically,
emotionally, physically and socially through cooperation between home and
school”.
Austin Schools have an open campus and
parents are always welcome and encouraged to visit. |
