Battle Mountain High School has had a successful and rewarding history as teachers, students, administration and the community have worked together to create various programs and improved offerings for those we serve.   A tremendous thanks is given to those who have worked so diligently for the high school youth of our community.
Our school has been involved in efforts to coordinate curriculum with the state standards.  This effort began with all staff writing specific curriculum with goals and objectives which reflected current efforts in classrooms.  Specifically, the English, math and science departments have gone one step farther and coordinated curriculum with the state standards which have been implemented in these classes.  All teachers will continue working on curriculum, coordinating with the standards, putting curriculum on the internet for parents and others to review, and finally, planning assessment which will measure the success of these efforts.
Administration, teachers and support staff have been planning the introduction of AP classes at the high school for the last couple of years.  Training has been given to specific individuals and our first AP class has been instituted this year.  This course is AP English and currently the first fifteen students in our school are getting the opportunity to stretch themselves in a college oriented course.  These students also have the opportunity to test their knowledge and if they score appropriately on tests provided by the College Board, can earn college credit in addition to the credit they would earn toward high school graduation.
Our school to career’s program has continued to give students opportunities to explore the world of work through study and internships.  Over fifty students a year have benefited from the internship opportunities offered by businesses in our community.  The most recent addition, made possible through combined high school and school to career’s money, is an additional computer lab designed to accommodate increasing demand by students to use the internet and other computer accessories in their daily work as well as the pursuit of career opportunities and information.
Finally, our school improvement program has begun to soar.  Training has been provided to teachers in school wide assessment, rubrics, taxonomy, curriculum and the standards.  In addition, teachers have made decisions which have resulted in the implementation of a reading period, the requirement and measurement of quality work on assignments, a school wide spelling list which all teachers give students and expect to be used correctly in written work, and finally, the use of pre and post tests to measure the learning of students in classes.
